What is Covid-19 Bus Service Support Grant (CBSSG)?

Is is a grant from the Dft to help support and restart the bus industry in England during Covid-19

When was it paid to operators?

The first instalment of CBSSG money received from the DfT covered operators between 13 March 2020 to 8 June 2020 split into three 4-week periods. (Please read beneath first table for information on second grant instalment.)

How did we divide the first grant between operators?

We based the payments to each operator on mileage covered on the tendered routes in 2019/20. This was considered to be a fairer system than trying to calculate “lost” revenue for each route. Only contracts let through competitive tender were included as that enabled us to include the community transport contractors as well as Big Bus, but not cover the emergency/de-minimis contracts which were treated as “commercial” services due to the overall value of these to the council.

How did we divide the second grant between operators?

We now have the a second batch of £276,000 (CBSSG-Restart) intended to cover 9 June 2020 to 3 August 2020 as 8 weeks in one hit. We have applied the same basic formula, but this time around have included the de-minimis contracts as the DfT have now revised the guidelines to exclude them from the commercial pot. As such, operators are included this time around who missed out previously. We are also allowed to reclaim any costs incurred by SCCCloseSuffolk County Council in making buses “safe” during Covid. To date that amounts to £5,242.50 spent on social distancing signs for the bus stations across the County.
